Tomoyo (知世 Tomoyo) is a crossover character from CLAMP's Cardcaptor Sakura. In Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, she is the princess of Kurogane's Nihon Country who sends the ninja on his quest. She is the counterpart of Tomoyo Daidouji from Cardcaptor Sakura.

She appears as four separate alternative versions throughout the series: she meets Sakura first as "President Tomoyo" of the Piffle Princess Company in Piffle Country; then as Princess Tomoyo of the Country of Nihon -- Kurogane's master and childhood friend; briefly appears as a schoolgirl in the Hanshin Republic; and as Princess of the Birdcage Kingdom.

Personality[]

She has a very kind and open personality, willing to sacrifice her own wellbeing for that of others. However, she also has a humorous side that is prone to annoying Kurogane. With her great level of power, Tomoyo has the ability to cross dimensions and have precognitive visions through her dreams.

History[]

Princess Tomoyo in Nihon[]

Tomoyo is a powerful miko sorceress responsible for maintaining the wards of Nihon that protect the country from demons.

Young Tomoyo

While Tomoyo is her given name, she also goes by the hereditary name of Tsukuyomi, the Princess of Shirosagi Castle who keeps the wards. She has an older sister, Amaterasu (Kendappa-ou of RG Veda), the Empress of Nihon. Tomoyo's powers are related to the moon, which grants her the ability to send people through time and space and also to communicate to others through dreams (or at least other alternative versions of herself). Tsukuyomi is a Japanese word associated with the moon, while Amaterasu is associated with the sun.

Tomoyo lived in Shirosagi Castle and was their preistess from her youth. Despite her age, she was the most powerful priestess in Japan. She grew up with her older sister, Amaterasu.

Kurogane and Tomoyo met soon after his mother's death. As Amaterasu's soldiers attempted to calm the frightened Kurogane, he defeated them all. Amaterasu decided to personally fight the young boy, but Tomoyo intervened, stopping him with her magic. She asked him to "let his mother rest," and after he fell asleep crying, had him taken to the castle.

When Kurogane woke up, he found Tomoyo by his bedside and asked her to bury Ginryu with his mother. It is later revealed that she did not do this due to an earlier request made by Kurogane's mother. She returns the sword to him in preparation for the fight against Fei Wong Reed.

In the begining of the story, Kurogane defeats numerous enemies of the Princess, killing them all. Tomoyo was not happy at all with Kurogane's manners, as he did not avoid unnecessary death, and tells him that he doesn't understand the true meaning of strength. She then sends him to Yuuko (the Dimensional Witch) on a journey until he grasps the true meaning of strength to protect his loved ones. She also imposes on him a seal that reduces his strength each time he kills someone unnecessarily.

It's later revealed this "seal" also has a protective feature. When Kurogane was in Celes, Tomoyo knew that this seal wouldn't hold his protection for long and that he would die. She searched for a way to save him and Fai. It's then when she talked to Kurogane (although he wasn't aware until after he returned to Nihon) and told him that he needed to give something of equal value to save Fai. He cut his arm and thus left Sohi in Celes in order to save him.

In the Celes Arc, Kurogane is apparently spared the damage he receives due to the protective spell that was placed upon him before leaving Japan by Tomoyo.

When the group comes to Nihon Country to rest, she sacrifices her yumemi (dreamseer) powers to keep the travelers safe. She is impressed that Kurogane actually learned the meaning of true strength. She had to create a barrier (kekkai) when Syaoran fought with Seishirou.

In Ch 182, Tomoyo is last seen saying goodbye to Kurogane. Kurogane swears to Tomoyo he'll come back and makes his vow once more.

President Tomoyo in Piffle[]

Piffle Tomoyo

In another universe in the same series, Tomoyo is the President of Piffle Princess, a corporation that sponsors a race with one of Sakura's feathers as the prize. This version of Tomoyo is quite similar to her Cardcaptor Sakura alternative version in personality and circumstances, owning a video camera with which she plans to tape Sakura's performance in the race, and she also creates a costume for Sakura to wear. She also has female bodyguards in this universe just like the Cardcaptor Tomoyo. In this world, there is also a brief reference to Kero (Kerberos), shown later in an episode where Kero-chan appears. He makes a very short appearance as a balloon-like figure that resembles him a little in volume 10. She was confident that Syaoran's group would win back the feather, which is why she organized the Dragonfly race, just like her counterpart in Nihon told her in dreams. At last, it's discovered that she cheated in the race herself to discover Kyle Rondart, because he knew about the feather's power and that he was after the feathers.

Later on in the Nihon Arc, she sent Fuuma a mechanical arm for Kurogane after he had cut it himself as a payment to save Fai in Celes.

Princess Tomoyo in Birdcage[]

In the Tsubasa Chronicle the Movie: The Princess in the Birdcage Kingdom, Tomoyo re-appears being as the princess of that country. Her uncle cast a spell upon her to make her lose her ability to speak (alluding to an episode of Cardcaptor Sakura). However, she can still communicate by touching another person and speaking telepathically.

Trivia[]

  • Her given name Tomoyo (知世) means "worldly wisdom".
