Clow Reed (クロウ・リード, Kurō Rīdo) is a crossover character from Cardcaptor Sakura. He is mentioned in xxxHolic constantly by Yūko Ichihara, since both magicians are known to have worked together for the creation of the Mokonas.

In Cardcaptor Sakura, Clow Reed was a very powerful magician- who had died before the storyline began- and the creator of the Clow Cards. He created Yue (月) and Cerberus as guardians for the cards, to ensure that they would be passed on properly. It's also known that Syaoran Li is a distant relative of Clow on his mothers side.

Near death, Clow chose Sakura Kinomoto to be the new mistress of the Clow Cards. The series develop on Sakura's quest to capture the Clow cards, with Kero's help and later on from Syaoran Li.

As the Sakura Card arc progresses, it's revealed that Clow reincarnated into Eriol Hiiragizawa and Fujitaka Kinomoto- Sakura's father. He split his magic between Eriol and wished for Sakura to give the other half to her father.

History[]

In Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, Clow Reed is mentioned by Yuko frequently. They seem to have worked together for the same event that Yuko always talks about: "the day that has to come". For this purpose, both created the Mokonas (which implies that they had met the "Real" Mokona of Cephiro).

Fei Wong Reed also mentions Clow quite frequently, and he's also a descendant of Clow. Fei Wong considers him and Yuko as meddlers in his affairs. Note that Fei Wong constantly mentions that he wants to grant a wish, which is to bring back a life. Yuko states that this is not possible, and this was proved by Clow himself.

King clow and sakura

King Clow in the altered timeline

In the altered timeline, Clow is the King of Clow Country and father to Toya and Sakura. Little was known about him, since he died before the storyline began. He allowed the excavation of the ruins by the archeologist Fujitaka, and allowed his adoptive son (Clone Syaoran) to become close to his "daughter", Princess Sakura, in order for the boy open up. It's implied that he possesed great power which was useful to foresee Clone Syaoran and Sakura's fate. He would also teach Yukito his knowledge of magic.

It was hinted that King Clow and Clow Reed could be the same. This was confirmed in chapter 220.

Additonally, chapter 190 revealed that Fujitaka was the original King in Clow, as well as Sakura and Toya's father. Watanuki from xxxHolic also shares a resemblance to Clow Reed, hinting that they might be related. This was confirmed in chapter 201 when it was revealed that Watanuki was born to fill the void that "Syaoran" created when he made his wish of turning back time, thus he became Syaoran and Sakura's son, as well as it turned him into Clow's relative. Yuko also remarks that Watanuki resembles Clow when he was younger.

"Syaoran" is also a descendant of Clow Reed- through his parents, Sakura and Syaoran Li (the clones). The reason why Clow Reed is able to have this relation is not a blood one, but it is because he paid with his magic for reviving Clone Syaoran, thus becoming related to him.

It's further explained in chapter 220 that Yuko's death led to this unfolding of events in Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. Clow Reed wished for her to "remain", or to keep on living, but accidentally. Thus Yuko was froze in death and couldn't move on to dying. Therefore, regretting being the "greatest magician", Clow travelled to an altered "Clow Country" after "Syaoran Li" had made his wish. He "left behind" those he cared about, most likely Yue and Cerberus (died and reincarnated into Eriol and Fujitaka from Cardcaptor Sakura). Nadeshiko, Sakura's mother, died; while Fujitaka became an archeologist who later became Clone Syaoran's father. Thus Syaoran, left a void like he did with his own parents. Clow filled that void by becoming the new king of Clow and Sakura's and Toya's father.

Clow was also the one who created the famous "tube" that appeared in chapter 01, the same one that Yuko possesed. [1]Being a magician of extreme power, he seems to have forseen all that this events, and prepared for them, creating the Mokonas to help Syaoran in his quest, and also leaving this tube in his will.

While the reason for Fei Wong's plans of reviving Yuko seemed very suspicious (Fei Wong always talked about Yuko as a interloper in his plans), this was finally explained in Chapter 227, as Fei Wong states that this would be "the only proof that he exceeds Clow". His real motives for bringing her back to life would not be "caring" for Yuko, but as seen in the epilogue, it is because his magic would have been so great that this thought alone would have created Fei Wang for the sole purpose of reviving her.
